When I started reading The House of the Seven Gables I was shocked that I actually liked the book. The story gripped me and the writing was beautiful. And I expected the same outcome for The Scarlet Letter. However, I’m finding that I am having a hard time getting into the book. It has great potential: sex, adultery, vengeance, and betrayal. But I’m sad to admit that I am not satisfied with just reading the undertones. I am a person of the 21st century and I want more action. Give me sex, fights, name calling, threats…all the stuff you expect to see in a rated R film. Hawthorne’s treatment of the subjects was probably revolutionary in his times. Today, these subjects aren’t as taboo and his treatment of the subject is way too tame for my liking. It is more like reading a sermon than a novel.
I’m only halfway through the novel and I’m hoping that it picks up a bit.
