This weekend I am heading to Gloucester, Massachusetts. This is a great place for a weekend getaway. Since I am a history nerd here are some facts about the town. It was founded in 1623, which means that it was the first settlement in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Gloucester is known for fishing. Not only was it an important shipbuilding center it boasts that the first schooner was constructed there in 1713. Also Gorton’s (the fish stick people) started in this city in 1849, under the name of John Pew & Sons. In 1957 it changed its name to Gorton’s of Gloucester.
Last night I was watching a show about the states on the History Channel and during the segment on Massachusetts they discussed Gloucester and its importance to the history of the Commonwealth. I am looking forward to my long weekend away from the hustle and bustle of Boston. And throw in some history…well I’ll be as happy as a clam.
Have fun!
