I haven’t read much of the novel, Memoirs of a Geisha yet, but so far I am very intrigued by the writing style. Arthur Golden has done a superb job of creating such a likable narrator who can hook the reader right from the start. His writing is exquisite. The book starts off by introducing the narrator Sakamoto Chiyo, a young girl from Yoroido, Japan. Her mother is gravely ill and there doesn’t seem much hope for a recovery. In addition her father is old and Chiyo’s older sister is not old enough to raise young Chiyo, especially since the family is not well off. Can’t wait to see how this shakes out. Like I said, I’m hooked….
Captivating Beginning
