Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

I was thrilled when I heard that there would be a fourth “Pirates” movie.  I absolutely loved the first one, “The Curse of the Black Pearl.”  Loved it.  Then “Dead Man’s Chest” came out in 2006.  It was okay.  But I still had high hopes for the third installment “At World’s End” released in 2007.  After watching that one I was so confused.  What really happened?

But I am stubborn.  This didn’t deter my loyalty.  Then last week I read some articles and interviews that the “Pirates” people were well aware of the flaws of the last two films.  They were determined to make the latest one, “On Stranger Tides” less confusing and shorter.  I read this and thought fantastic.  Maybe they will reestablish the magic of the first movie.

So I purchased my tickets and headed to the theater.  The theater went dark and the movie started.  Twenty minutes into it, I thought to myself “All right, they have made some improvements, but it is still falling short.”  There were moments of entertainment.  But I also found myself getting bored.  “Pirates” is an action film so it should be filled with action.  The audience shouldn’t get bored.  If they cut out about twenty or thirty minutes I believe it would be a much more exciting film.

The best part of the film is when the pirates are attacked by the mermaids.  I felt it wasn’t until this point that the action really started.  Unfortunately this is pretty far into the movie.

Over all, I would give this film a C+ rating.  There is entertainment value, but it could have been so much more.

I’m like you and adored the first one. It literally changed my life, which sounds stupid for a Disney movie, but it did. And like you, my enthusiasm waned with each successive film. I have high hopes for this one – it will be worth the money just to see some shots of blue water again.

  2. The first movie was so so so good. And I grew up next to Disneyland and my favorite ride was Pirates of the Caribbean. If you are a fan I would suggest seeing the latest one. I’m curious what you think of it. Let me know if you get a chance.

I agree that the Mermaid scene is the best scene of the movie… I probably liked it more than you, in fact it’s the only Pirates movie that I like o.O

  4. I loved the Mermaid scene! Any tips on other movies that are out right now?

Hmm… I’m not sure man… Can’t go wrong with Thor or Fast Five…

Kungfu Panda 2 opens this week I think… if you are into that kind of thing…

If not wait one more week for X-Men First Class! 🙂

  5. Thanks! I’m curious about Fast Five. I saw a commercial for X-Men and it looks pretty good. I’ll have to check them out. Have a great weekend!
